A new UK government-backed initiative is using the power of sport to tackle male loneliness, with prominent athletes from across disciplines throwing their support behind the launch of the Team Up campaign.

Launched in late January 2026, the Team Up campaign aims to address high levels of social isolation among boys and young men aged 11–24 by showcasing how sport and shared activity can create welcoming spaces for connection and wellbeing. The campaign brings together major sporting organisations - including the Premier League, English Football League (EFL), Rugby Football League, England and Wales Cricket Board, Lawn Tennis Association and Parkrun - alongside the men’s charity Movember.

Among the high-profile supporters are teenage darts sensation Luke Littler and fellow PDC star Luke Humphries, as well as rugby legend Jonny Wilkinson and young cricket talent Jacob Bethell, who are encouraging young people to get involved in local club activities and community sport sessions.

The campaign runs nationally through early February, offering a range of local activities designed to help participants build friendships, boost confidence and feel part of a team. Sport organisations from grassroots clubs to professional bodies are hosting events and outreach efforts aimed at demonstrating that belonging and connection can begin on the pitch, track or court.

Team Up’s cross-sport support, including elite athletes and national governing bodies, underscores sport’s potential to deliver social impact beyond competition — providing structured, community-centred opportunities that strengthen mental health and reduce isolation.
